After 530 km of non-stop running, the Zanders Roparun team arrived in Rotterdam late in the afternoon of 21 May, completing a relay race that took almost 45 hours and started late on 19 May in Paris. In addition to the eight runners, the other 15 team members worked tirelessly as well, contributing by either biking, driving, map-reading, getting lost-and-finding-the-way-back, cooking and much more, including dealing with many logistical challenges. Despite a lack of sleep during the race, which posed an interesting challenge to all of us, we managed to stay positive and enthusiastic throughout – or at least behaved as if we were. Yes, there were some hiccups (getting almost disqualified towards the end of the race for driving on the route, encountering rain showers even though the forecast was sunny) but these were perceived as minor details.
Prior to the actual Roparun, the team had started the fundraising for the Roparun Foundation, which supports palliative care for cancer patients. The fundraising activities varied from a bingo evening, washing cars (and painting them Zanders-green), Kingsday garage sales, to bluntly stalking people to buy lottery tickets or donate money. In total, we managed to raise over EUR 16,000 with these activities. Another EUR 3,500 was raised from our main sponsors: Illionx, FMO, Cardano, Romein & Broeksteeg, Van Ekeris and Dierenartsenpraktijk Midden-Zeeland. In addition, several additional sponsors helped us out with materials and/or food, including De Smaakengel, Sligro, Kaashandel E. de Vries, Smorre Catering, Groentehandel de Tuinbouw, bakkerij Oltshoorn and many others. We are so very grateful to each of these great sponsors!
In the meantime, Zanders has secretly already started training for next year’s edition of the Roparun.
