“During my master’s degree program in Tilburg, I wanted to combine my dissertation with an internship. At Zanders, I was given the opportunity and the resources to write a dissertation about the credit crisis – an extremely current topic (at that time).” Tom investigated to what extent the credit crisis had a direct impact on the financing methods of large international corporations. After successfully finishing his dissertation and his studies, he set to work at Zanders as an Associate Consultant within the Corporates team.

The Corporates team advises and supports multinationals and large and medium-sized companies in the area of treasury management and corporate finance. The team handles a wide range of assignments. Examples include setting up and structuring treasury departments, the support of corporate (re)financing programs or the (temporary) support and improvement of cash management processes. In addition, the team supports organizations with the improvement of their policy in the area of interest rate risks and currency risk. Furthermore, the Corporates team provides support with respect to acquisitions and divestments.

In at the deep end
On Tom’s first day at Zanders, he immediately started with aclient; a large Dutch construction company. “My task was to clean up the bank guarantee facilities and to improve the bank guarantee process within the entire organization,” he explains. “This assignment ultimately led to the implementation of a digital bank guarantee platform.

In this period, I established a good relationship with the supplier of this platform. I was even asked to provide a presentation about the practical value of such platforms at an international trade finance conference in Rome.” During his next assignment, Tom served as the interim cash manager of an international company working in the entertainment industry. At this firm, he was also involved in the selection of a treasury management system.

High level of independence
One of the reasons why Tom chose Zanders was the high degree of independence and personal responsibility that is expected by the company of its employees. “Zanders encourages a hands-on mentality and ensures that you are not tied to any apron-strings when it comes to executing an assignment. Essentially, you bear personal responsibility for the assignment, but you can always count on the knowledge and support that Zanders has to offer you when required. In addition, it is extremely stimulating that as a consultant, you sit with the client virtually from the outset. You are representing the companyZanders for this client.”

Another attractive aspect of Zanders for Tom are the international opportunities offered by the company. Tom says: “Zanders has three foreign offices. Additionally, the Corporates team executes various international assignments. Besides the international aspect, I was impressed with the room given for employees’ personal initiatives, the no-nonsense culture and the opportunity to participate in the CFA training program.
